Traveling to and in Morocco

Arrival by plane
The most comfortable way to get to Morocco is by plane. The international airports are Casablanca, Marrakech, Fès, Agadir, Oujda and Nador.

To reach Rabat, Ouarzazate, Essaouira and  various other airports you have to make a stopover, usually in Casablanca.

Arrival by ship
From Algeciras in Spain you can take the ferry to Tangier / Morocco. Please inquire in advance about the required papers if you are bringing a vehicle!

On the way in Morocco

Domestic flights
Probably the most comfortable (and expensive) option to get from A to B in Morocco. These are offered for example by Royal Air Maroc with stopover in Casablanca. Domestic flights are only worthwhile on very long journeys. You also miss the best impressions on the way.

A very comfortable and relaxed alternative with the most beautiful views, is booking a guided tour with driver and comfortable vehicle with Caravane de Rêve.

Taxis
Taxis are relatively cheap in Morocco and are also common in rural areas. For a ride in the  cities you have to expect a taxi price of about 20 Dirhams. There is a distinction between the Petit- and the Grand Taxis. The Petit Taxis are small and transport only individual passengers up to 3 people. The Grand Taxis are shared taxis, the max. 6 passengers share the price. Negotiate the price before departure or insist that the taximeter is turned on.  As a tip, the taxi price is well rounded up.

Bus
In Morocco, overland buses are very popular. The two companies Supra-Tours and CTM have a wide network of routes and technically sound vehicles, with them you travel safely and reasonably through the country.

Train
Marrakech, Rabat, Casablanca, Meknes, Fes and Tangier are reachable by train. It is recommended to book a ticket with seat reservation in 1st class!

Rental car
As a rule, car rental from 18 years is possible. However, some car rental agencies require a minimum age or a certain number of years of driving experience. As security, a deposit is often required in cash or by credit card.

The roads in Morocco are relatively well developed, and around the big cities you will also find  modern highways. Basically nothing speaks against driving in Morocco.  A fast driving style, daring overtaking and disregard of the rules of entry are not unusual for Moroccan traffic! The accident rate is high. Avoid trips in the night if possible. The lighting of many vehicles is insufficient and often pedestrians and stray animals are on the road. To drive to more remote areas, a four-wheel drive vehicle is recommended.

Important Morocco Travel Tip:   do not drive alone in remote desert areas. Always travel with at least two vehicles and a guide. In the blazing desert sun, a car breakdown in the middle of nowhere can have drastic consequences. Always have enough water with you.
