Safety

Morocco is generally considered a safe destination.

Morocco is a peaceful, hospitable country and can be traveled easily.
The political situation is mostly stable. King Mohamed V enjoys great popularity and acceptance.
Due to the worldwide increased risk of terrorism, security arrangements have been strengthened in Morocco. The risk of a terrorist attack in Morocco, as everywhere else in the world, cannot be ruled out.

In the big cities

– especially in the tourist areas, one should always keep an eye on one’s valuables

Women travelling alone

Women travelling alone can also visit Morocco without danger. The Moroccan men are friendly, if sometimes a bit intrusive, especially if you’re dressed inappropriately (as previously mentioned). The best way to handle contact attempts is in a friendly, but self-confident manner. In the evenings, single women are advised to avoid dark alleys in the medinas.

Avoid driving a car at night

People dressed in dark clothing, and goats and sheep walk on the roads at night!

The smuggling and possession or consumption of drugs is punishable by jail sentences of up to 10 years.

Morocco is in an earthquake zone

The edges of the African and Eurasian plates rub against each other below the Maghreb. The last major quake was registered in May 2003 in the region around Algiers and had a magnitude of 6.8 on the Richter scale. In the case of an earthquake, it is important to stay calm.

Water in the desert …

is indispensable during a desert stay. Make sure that enough drinking water is carried along on all trips into the desert. For self-organized trips in the Sahara you should be traveling with several vehicles, so you can help each other in the event of a breakdown.
The rare downpours in the desert areas can be a great danger! When it rains heavily and persistently, canyons and wadis quickly turn into raging rivers. In case of rain, leave gorges immediately and always follow the instructions of your guide.
